About Maria Marchant Therapy

My Approach

Before becoming a Psychotherapist, I spent many years working in the City.  Life looked busy, successful and productive from the outside, but that experience taught me something important: people often carry far more than others realise.

Many of the people who come to see me are used to getting on with things.  They've spent months, sometimes years, telling themselves they're fine, that they'll work it out, or that they just need to keep going.  Sometimes that works for a while. Sometimes it doesn't.

I work with adults, young people and children. While the reasons people seek support vary, it's often less about one significant event and more about the impact of carrying difficult experiences, worries or responsibilities for longer than feels manageable.  People contact me for all sorts of reasons.  Sometimes it's anxiety, a bereavement, a difficult relationship or pressure at work.  Sometimes there isn't a clear reason at all. Life simply feels more difficult than it used to.  What matters to me is understanding the person, not just the difficulty that has brought them to therapy.

I draw on EMDR, CBT, psychodynamic and person-centred approaches. Rather than working in one fixed way, I adapt my approach to the person, their circumstances and what might be most helpful at that point in their life.

I offer therapy in Chislehurst, South East London and online.

supporting positive change

Individual Therapy

People get in touch with me for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes they know exactly what's brought them here. Sometimes they don't. They just know that something feels different, harder, or more difficult to keep carrying on their own.

My role is to get to know you, understand what's been happening in your life and help you make sense of it. Some conversations focus on what's happening right now. Others help us understand patterns that may have been around for much longer.

You don't need to arrive with the right words or a clear plan. You just need a place to start.

Couples Therapy

Relationships can be hard work at times. Life gets busy and before long you can find yourselves having the same conversation over and over again without really getting anywhere.

Couples therapy gives you the chance to slow things down and talk about what's really been happening.  These sessions belong to you both. Whether you're looking to improve communication, rebuild trust, reconnect, or simply understand each other better, we'll work together on what feels most important.
Sometimes couples come because something isn't working. Sometimes they come because their relationship matters enough to invest in it.

Family Therapy

Every family goes through difficult periods. Sometimes everyone is trying their best, but things still feel difficult at home.

Family sessions give you the time and space to talk openly, understand each other's perspectives and think about what might help.

Together, we'll focus on what's happening in your family and what needs to change for things to feel easier.

Child & Adolescent Therapy

Growing up can be tough at times.  Whether it's anxiety, friendships, school pressures or difficulties at home, young people can often find themselves carrying more than they know how to manage.

I offer a warm, supportive space where they can talk openly, feel understood and work through what's been troubling them.  My aim is to help them feel more confident, more resilient and less alone with whatever they're facing.

Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy offers an opportunity to slow down, relax and focus on what you'd like to change.

Before we begin, we'll talk about your goals and what you'd like to achieve.   Sessions are tailored to you, using a combination of guided hypnosis and Control System techniques.

You remain in control throughout.  My role is to guide you; the change comes from you.

EMDR Therapy

EMDR can be incredibly helpful when something from the past still feels as though it's affecting life in the present.

You don't need to go into every detail of what happened.   Instead, we work together to help your brain process the experience in a way that feels less overwhelming.

We take things at your pace.   My job is to guide you through the process, helping difficult memories feel less distressing and less powerful than they once were.
