Please reach me via email at maria@mariamarchanttherapy.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
The first session involves an introduction to the therapeutic process, a discussion of your reasons for seeking therapy and an exploration of your expectations and goals. The goal in this first session as you are starting therapy is to provide an opportunity to establish rapport and set goals for future sessions. Typical questions to ask me could include:-
1. Can you please share your therapeutic approach or style? Are you more directive or guiding in your approach?
2. What types of treatment or interventions do you believe would be beneficial for me?
3. What is the main objective of the treatment or intervention you are proposing?
4. Are there any other treatment options that could address the symptoms or challenges I am experiencing?
5. How will you track and evaluate my progress during the course of treatment?
6. Can you provide insight into your experience treating clients with similar circumstances to mine?
7. How do you typically structure your therapy sessions?
8. Will there be assignments or tasks for me to complete outside of our sessions?
9. How do you define and gauge success in the context of therapy?
10. Could you explain your policies regarding appointment cancellations or missed sessions?
Therapists appreciate when clients ask questions, as it allows for better alignment on goals, concerns, and expectations. This open dialogue ensures clarity and understanding as we begin our therapeutic work together.
Confidentiality is a prerequisite within the therapy room. This is where therapeutic trust begins to develop when a client knows they can share exactly what is going on in their lives without fear. However, there are limits to confidentiality where psychotherapists are under legal and ethical obligation to disclose information which will be explained before we begin our work together. Always know that this is to keep you safe. As a professionally qualified and Accredited BACP (British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy) psychotherapist, I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework.
It has three main sections:
My commitment to clients provides a summary of working to professional standards and building an ethical relationship
Ethics specifies the values, principles and personal moral qualities that inform my work and underpin supervision.
Good practice considers the application of my commitments to clients and ethics to my practice.
When you start therapy you may notice positive changes in your thoughts, emotions, attitude or behaviours. You may recognize that you’re more capable of coping with difficult situations or emotions with resilience, have better self-awareness in social contexts, or have improved communication skills.
Progressing toward your goals in therapy is important. However, it’s important to mention that therapy is not a linear path – it’s a dynamic and personalized journey where emotional ups and downs are natural.
Initially, sessions may be weekly, and as progress is being made, they may become less frequent depending on individual needs, concerns, and goals.
